لا جدال في أن الدراسات الأدبية حول الإنسان، صورة الإنسان العربي بالتحديد، من حيث النوازع والأفكار، لا تزال تفتقر إليها المكتبة العراقية. ولعل الشعور بهذه الحاجة، كان الدافع الأكبر إلى اختياري هذا الموضوع.
ولما كان الموضوع يرتبط بالإنسان في صراعه مع الحياة، ويمثل زمانين ومكانين مختلفين عاشهما الشاعر، فلا بد من تقرير حقيقة لا مناص منها، وهي أن أشعار الزمان والمكان لا يمكن النظر إليها إلا نتيجة لازمة حضارية، بكل ما تحمل هذه الكلمة من معنى شمولي في صراع الإنسان مع أخيه الإنسان.
فنحن إزاء مشكلة أدبية ذات بواعث نفسية لا يمكن الوصول إليها أو كشف أبعادها إلا من خلال تحليل شامل للنص أو ما يرمي إليه، وأبو فراس لم يحظ بالشيء الكافي من هذا القبيل.
ولما كان الموضوع يرتبط بالإنسان- الشاعر- فقد آثرت أن أتناوله من جوانب متعددة تهتم بمواقفه وأفكاره وميوله لذا كانت هذه الجوانب هي علاقاته الاجتماعية ومواقفه من الزمان والمكان ورموزهما.
لذا كان لزامًا علينا أن نقسم موضوع بحثنا إلى أربعة فصول هي كالتالي: [الفصل الأول: الرؤى الزمانية ونظرة الشاعر، الفصل الثاني: الواقع المكاني وجدلية الحضور والغياب، الفصل الثالث: جدلية الارتباط بين الزمان والمكان، الفصل الرابع: الدراسة الفنية (الصورة الشعرية)].
