يتناول هذا الكتاب صورة مصر والمصريين والإسلام في الأدب الغربي ولدى الراى العام هناك وهو موضوع يشدني منذ زمن طويل ويثير في نفسي انزعاجا مستمرا، ولم أبادر بالكتابة فيه من قبل خوفا من أن يعتقد البعض أنني قد أعادي الغرب، وإن كنت قد بادرت بالكتابة في هذا الموضوع فذلك يرجع إلى إنني لاحظت أن الغربيين يتخذون منا موقفا عاما سلبيا لا يقتصر على تصويرنا في الأدب فقط بل يتغدى ذلك ويشمل جميع الميادين مثل السياسة والاقتصاد والفلسفة والتاريخ ووسائل الإعلام المختلفة، ويعملون على ان نظهر في كتاباتهم وتصويراتهم لنا دائما على أننا الأضعف والأقل قيما حضاريا وثقافيا وفكريا سلوكيا وهذا- بطبيعة الحال- يمثل موقفا عنصريا بعيدا كل البعد عن الواقع، والنماذج التي اخترتها من الأدب الغربي هنا لكي أعرض فكرتي كلها كتب قرأتها منذ زمن بعيد أو قريب وقد يجد القاري امثلة أخرى، فهناك الكثير من الروايات الاجنبية التى تصورنا.
