عثر هافل على وظيفة عامل مساعد في مصنع للبيرة في مدينة "تروتنوفا" التشيكية. كان عمره وقتها سبع وثلاثون عاماً. كانت وظيفته نقل صناديق البيرة في مستودع المصنع. كان يلتقي عن هذا العمل 1700 كرون تشيكي شهرياً. لكن العائد الحقيقي تمثل في اكتسابه خبرات جديدة وإتباعه طريقة جديدة في الكتابة. كتب هافل نفسه فيما بعد عن هذا الأمر وقال إن بداية السبعينات كان بمثابة أزمة إبداع بالنسبة له. كتب في تلك الفترة مسرحية "المتآمرون", وكان يقارنها بـ"اللحم المشوي الذي نسى أن يسحبه من الفرن حتى تفحم تماماً", وأضاف: "ليس من قبيل المصادفة أن أكتب تعليقاً على "المتآمرين" من خمسين صفحة, شرحت فيه بشكل مفصل كل أغراضهم ونواياهم".
لقد بعث عمله في وظيفة عامل مساعد فيه من جديد خبرة الحياة "مع الطبقة السفلى" التي عاشها في الخمسينات, تلك الخبرة ألهمته, لأنه رأى هناك "الأبعاد العبثية والشاذة والحقيقية للحياة". هذه الخبرة من مصنع البيرة ألهمته ليكتب واحدة من أفضل المسرحيات "المقابلة", إن لم تكن أفضلها على الإطلاق.
