يتكون الكتاب من ثمانية فصول،
حيث رأى المؤلف أن الأخصائي الاجتماعي في المجال الطبي يجب أولاً أن يكون على علم بالمراحل التاريخية التي مرت بها الأنشطة الاجتماعية منذ أن كان الدافع فيها هو الرغبة في فعل الخير حتى وصلت إلى نشاط مهني قائم على أسس علمية مهنية،
سواء أكان هذا التطور في الخارج أو في جمهورية مصر العربية وجاء هذا في الفصل الأول. ومنطقياً أن لا يستطيع الأخصائي ممارسة عمله دون أن يكون واعياً لماهية المهنة والنشاط الذي يقوم به وخصائصها وأهدافها وجاء هذا في الفصل الثاني.
وجاء الفصل الثالث لتوضيح الأسس والمقومات التي تساهم في إنجاح ممارسة الخدمة الاجتماعية في المجال الطبي.
ثم الفصل الرابع ليوضح من هو الممارس لهذه المهنة وما هي صفاته وأدواره في المجال الطبي. أما الفصل الخامس فقد وضح المؤسسة الطبية وأنواعها ومكانها ووضع قسم الخدمة الاجتماعية الطبية داخل المؤسسة الطبية.
والفصل السادس كان حول الخدمة الاجتماعية الوقائية تعريفها وأهدافها وعناصرها.
أما الفصل السابع فقد كان حول تكلفة الخدمات الصحية للفرد والمجتمع وهل الخدمة الاجتماعية الطبية مهنة استثمارية.
ثم جاء الجزء الثاني من الكتاب وكان محاولة تطبيقية للخدمة الاجتماعية الطبية في المجال الطبي وإن كانت هذه المحاولة التطبيقية من خلال بحوث علمية حرص الباحث على أن يكون أحدها على المريض وكان هذا في الفصل الثامن والثاني عن أسرة المريض وكان هذا في الفصل التاسع.
