يشترك في كتابة هذه الرواية المثيرة اثنان من أشهر أدباء الخيال العلمي في العالم، وهذا التعاون التاريخي بين فريدريك بول وزميله آرثر سي كلارك رائد أدب الخيال العلمي يعد حدثًا أدبيًا عظيمًا ووداعًا رائعًا من الأديب الراحل والمفكر الكبير الذي ألف رواية ٢٠٠١: ملحمة الفضاء.
تحكي رواية النظرية الأخيرة قصة هوس رجل بالرياضيات، وتحتفي بالروح الإنسانية والمنهج العلمي، وهي أيضًا رواية فكرية آسرة يواجه فيها البشر الفناء على يد كائنات فضائية تكاد تكون كلية القدرة تدعى «عظماء المجرة»، وعلى البشر أن يتغلبوا على خلافاتهم السياسية والدينية، وأن يتحدوا… أو يهلكوا.
عام 1637 دون عالم الرياضيات الفرنسي بيير دو فيرما Pierre de Fermat في هامش أحد كتبه ملحوظة عن نظرية غامضة جاء فيها: «لقد اكتشفت حقًا برهانًا رائعًا لهذه النظرية لا يتسع له هذا الهامش»، ولم يدون هذا البرهان في مكان آخر. هكذا بدأ البحث عن «الكأس المقدسة» في الرياضيات؛ بحث لم ينته حتى عام 1994 عندما نشر أندرو وايلز Andrew Wiles برهانًا في 150 صفحة، لكن البرهان جاء مرهقًا ومفرطًا في الطول، واستخدمت فيه أساليب رياضية تفوق كثيرًا عصر فيرما، ولذلك لم يقتنع به كثير من النقاد، ومنهم رانجيت سوبرامانيان Ranjit Subramanian، وهو شاب من سريلانكا يتمتع بموهبة خاصة في الرياضيات وشغف بالنظرية الأخيرة الشهيرة.
كتب رانجيت برهانًا في ثلاث صفحات للنظرية لم يستعن فيه إلا بما كان متاحًا لفيرما من علم الرياضيات؛ وحاز عمله تقديرًا كبيرًا باعتباره إنجازًا عبقريًا، وجلب له الشهرة والثروة، لكنه لفت إليه في الوقت نفسه أنظار جهاز الأمن القومي، وأنظار جماعة غامضة تابعة للأمم المتحدة تدعى «السلام من خلال الشفافية» تمارس أنشطة سرية تتنافى مع اسمها. وفجأة وجد رانجيت نفسه هو وزوجته مايرا دو سويزا Myra de Soyza- خبيرة الذكاء الصناعي- وأسرتهما الناشئة منجرفين في تيار أحداث تهز العالم، واستغلت عبقريته في التفكير الرياضي النظري في تطبيقات ملموسة تحمل نذر الهلاك.
