تناولت بالدراسة العديد من القضايا والمشكلات التي لازمت تاريخ مصر الحديث والمعاصر عبر قرنين كاملين من الزمن، فتنوعت وتوزعت بذلك بين الجوانب السياسية والإقتصادية والإجتماعية والفكرية الثقافية والدينية وغيرها، وتستهل هذه الدراسات ببحث "حتمي" يناقش وضعية وثائق التاريخ المصري الحديث، وهي قضية محورية وخطيرة ربما تدور حولها كل قضايا التأريخ لمصر الحديثة، ويضم هذا الكتاب كذلك دراسة حول مناهج تأريخ لمصر الحديثة ووضعية الدراسات التاريخية سواء الأكاديمية أو غيرها، خلال القرنين الأخيرين، ورؤيتنا النقدية لهذه الكتابات وتوصيفها. وكذلك ظاهرة وفرة المذكرات وكتابها ثم المؤرخين الهواة "وكتبة" التاريخ، واصحاب "بوتيكاته"، كما تضم الدراسة مقالاً حول الفكر السياسي للمؤرخ المصري العظيم عبد الرحمن الجبرتي، ويتناول الكتاب كذلك دراسة مبتكرة تماماً، لم يسبق إليها البتة، وهي عرض صفحة جديدة في تاريخ النضال القومي والحركة الوطنية المصرية خلال فترة هامة وحاسمة من تاريخ مصر الحديثة، خلال حكم الوالي العظيم محمد علي باشا، عندما تقدم أحد مبعوثي عصره- وهو الفتى المصري اليافع حسنين البسيوني- بمذكرة ضافية إلى وزير الخارجية البريطامية وخصم محمد على العتيد- لورد بالمرستون عام 1838 يطلب فيها لمصر استقلالها التام بعيداً عن الدولة العثمانية، وإطراداً في هذا الإتجاه تتبع الدراسة اللاحقة الفكر السياسي عند على باشا مبارك، وهو الآخر أحد مبعوثي عصر محمد علي، والذي لعب أدواراً بارزة في تاريخ مصر الحديثة.ز خاصة في المجال التعليمي والثقافي كناظر للمعارف خلال فترات لاحقة، وتنتقل بعد ذلك الدراسات لرصد الدور الذي لعبه الإحتلال البريطاني فور دخوله مصر عام 1882 في تحطيم جيشمصر الوطني.
ويضم الكتاب كذلك دراسة حول مصر والوفاق الودي 1904، ثم فصل لاحق يتناول دراسة صحفية مصرية قدر لها أن تظهر في (27/ 1928) ساهم الزعيم الراحل سعد زغلول بدور بارز في أمر إصدارها، ثم موقف وزارة علي ماهر من قضية دخول مصر الحرب العالمية الثانية، ينتقل الكتاب بعد ذلك غلى دراسة حول المسألة الزراعية في مصر المعاصرة، ثم قضية المثقفين والتنوير في مصر الحديثة وأخيراً ظاهرة الجماعات والتنظيمات الدينية.
