إن المشكلة الأساسية التي واجهت الفن، هي أن الفن يريد أن يكون حرًا طليقًا، معبرًا عن روح الإنسان المتحررة من القيود والعوائق، في الوقت الذي أراد فيه رجال السياسة والأخلاق والدين، والمنظرين.. وغيرهم محاولة ضبط إيقاع الفن بحيث يتواءم مع مجريات الأمور في الدولة، بل ويكون في نفس الوقت ذا دور (محدد) سلفًا من قبل غير الفنانين المبدعين، ومتسقًا مع الأنساق الفلسفية للفلاسفة، والمفكرين، والرؤى المتباينة، والتي تختلف من عصر إلى عصر، ومن مجتمع لآخر، للساسة ورجال الحكم والدين والأخلاق. ولقد كان الصراع مريرًا، انتصر فيه الفن أحيانًا، وأحيانًا أخرى انحنى الفن للعاصفة، أو قبل الدور المنوط به من قبل غير المبدعين.
ولقد كانت المعضلة التي واجهها الفن، سواء مع الاتجاهات المثالية أو المادية هي محاولة احتوائه ضمن نسق جامد في أحيان كثيرة، وإضفاء دور محدد عليه، بقطع النظر، عن اتساق هذا مع الفن أو عدم اتساقه. ونحن في هذا الكتاب، وعبر نماذج مختارة، نحاول أن نقدم آراء الاتجاهين، حتى يتسنى لنا الوقوف على أهم الأفكار التي تردد صداها لديهما بشأن القيم الجمالية والفن.
