إن الدخول إلى عوالم مصطلح "الإغتراب" من أشق المهام لما فى ذلك المصطلح من مراوغة اكتسبها من طبيعته الزئبقية التى تجددت وظهرت بطرق مختلفة عبر العصور. وعلى الرغم من أن مصطلح "الإغتراب" يعتبر الآن من أكثر المصطلحات تداولاً فى جميع مجالات النشاط الثقافى الإنسانى فهو لا يزال يعانى من الغموض الذى تفرضه طبيعته، وبما أنه من الصعب وضع تعريف دقيق لمصطلحات العلوم الإنسانية فقد تضاربت الأقوال والإتجاهات فى شأن ذلك المصطلح المتعدد الدلالات لذا يفضل أن نتفق على ماهية الإغتراب فى استخدامات هذا البحث فنحن نعنى به تحديداً الإنفصام والإنفصال وما ينشأ عنهما من اشتقاقات مكملة. فالإغتراب ظاهرة إنسانية يمكن أن نتتبعها بشكل أو بآخر فى مختلف النظم والثقافات والمجتمعات، وحيثما يوجد أفراد يشعرون بتفردهم وتميز شخصياتهم، وبالعجز عن التجاوب مع الأوضاع العامة السائدة فى المجتمع الذى يعيشون فيه والثقافة التى يفترض أن ينتموا إليها، ويرفضون القيم العامة أو الشعبية التى تسود فى هذه الثقافات والتى يتقبلها بقية أفراد المجتمع. فالإغتراب يشكل ظاهرة إنسانية عامة، لا ينفرد بها جيل دون جيل، وهى موجودة منذ أن وطىء الإنسان هذه الأرض وبدأ طريق المعاناة، ولكن هذا الإغتراب على كثافة تواجده ظل غير محدد المفاهيم إلى وقت قريب.
