هذا الكتاب يتجه نحو دراسة العلل النفسية والقلبية التي تبطل قبول الأعمال وتنحرف بالإنسان عن الطريق السوي، كالرياء والعجب ونحوهما، إذ أن الدبوسي قد تحدث عن هذه العلل، كما تحدث أيضاً عن المراقبة وابتلاء الله للإنسان بمعنى اختباره بين عقله ونفسه وروحه، وعن المعرفة العامة ومعرفة الله الخاصة.
وقد تميز هذا الكتاب بمميزات عديدة نذكر منها:
1- امتاز عن سائر الكتب في هذا الصدد بصفاء الأسلوب، واستيعاب الفكرة، والتعمق في داخل النفس البشرية ليصل إلى أصول الداء، ويكشف أصل العقدة.
2-كشف العقدة النفسية وسبقه لعلماء التحليل النفسي بها.
3-العناية بتحليل النفس البشرية، وقد سبقه المحاسبي في هذا، وسبقه غيره من علماء التحليل النفسي كعمل متكامل. إذ أن في النصوص السابقة على كتابه من أقوال الزهاد، كالحسن البصري، وداود الطائي، وإبراهيم بن أدهم، وسفيان الثوري، وعبد الله بن المبارك وغيرهم، ما يشير إلى خبرة في التحليل والتعليل حينما يتحدثون في نصوص قصيرة عن النفس البشرية وخداعها، ولكن لا يمثل بحثاً متكاملاً في موضوع محدد.
أما الدبوسي فقد وصل بهذا المسلك -بعد أن سبقه في ذلك المحاسبي- إلى النضج بالنسبة لعصره، بل وبالنسبة لما بعد عصره تقريباً، إذ تتبع العلة- كما قلنا- بالتحليل والتعليل، والوصول من العلة إلى علتها حتى يصل إلى اصل الداء في أعمق المشاعر الإنسانية.
4-العناية بموضوع الخداع النفسي، وبتفصيل القول فيه، وكيف تخدع النفس صاحبها عن الحق، وتجمح به نحو الباطل وتقنعه به وتسيره على مقتضاه.
5-يعتبر الكتاب بحوثاً مستقلة في موضوعات السلوك بعد أن كان حديث العلماء عن السلوك مقصوراً على أقوال متناثرة لكل منهم لا تمثل بحثاً متكاملاً للموضوع، حتى يمكن القول إنه من المراجع الهامة في مجال علم النفس البشري.
6-الكتاب يعتبر كشفاً عن حقيقة السلوك الإسلامي الأصيل من أول ظهوره بهذا الاسم على طريقة السلف القائمة على الكتاب والسنة حقاً.
