قيمة هذا الكتاب ليست فقط فى الفصول التى تناول فيها المؤلف حرفية الكتابة للسينما والدور الذى تؤديه اللقطة بأحجامها المختلفة وحركة الكاميرا والمونتاج فى البناء الدرامي للفيلم ولكنها تمكن أيضاً فى تناوله الاختلافات البيئة بين القصة الأدبية أو المسرحية وبين الفيلم السينمائي المعد عن أى منها، وكيف يجب على كاتب السيناريو ايجاد المعادل الصورى للوصف الأدبي بالقصة أو المواقف الحوارية بالمسرحية دون الاخلال بالأصل وأورد العديد من الأمثلة لذلك.
وفى هذا الكتاب يفسر ج.هاورد لوسون تاريخ الفن السينمائي تفسيراً مرتبطاً بالاقتصاد وبالأزمات العالمية وبالصراع الاجتماعي وما تولد عن كل هذا من تطور فى هذا الفن.
وجون هاورد لوسون من كتاب الدراما المعروفين فى أمريكا وله عدة كتب نقدية مثل "فن كتابة المسرحية" ويعتبر مرجعاً هاماً لتاريخ المسرح وحرفيته. وله كذلك "كتاب الن السينمائي ومعركة الفكر" وفيه يحلل العديد من الأفلام الأمريكية من التى صفق لها الجمهور كثيراً مثل "ذهب مع الريح" و "فيفا زاباتا" ليوضح كيف تضع هوليود "السم فى العسل" كما يقولون وتمرر الكثير مما تريد أن توصله من أفكار عبر إطار فني جذاب يغفل عنه الكثير من المشاهدين.
وقد تعرض لوسون لاضطهاد المكارثية عندما اجتاحت الولايات المتحدة الامريكية ولكنه لم يرضخ لابتزازاتها وتهديداتها وبرغم ابتعاده عن ممارسة الكتابة السينمائية الا أنه لم يتوقف عن الكتابة النقدية فى الفن السينمائي والمسرحي.
