ذكر تقرير وزير الصحة الأميركية Surgeon General أن النسبة المئوية لعدد السنوات الضائعة من حياة الإنسان قبل الموت ونسبة عدد السنوات التي يحيى فيها مصاباً بعاهة بسبب الأمراض النفسية بلغ 15.4% بينما بلغ 15% بسبب الأمراض الخبيثة و 18.6% بسبب أمراض القلب كما يبلغ عدد المنتحرين في الولايات المتحدة بسبب اضطرابات المزاج Mood disorders في عام 1996 (31000 حالة)، كما يبلغ عدد حالات محاولة الانتحار لنفس السبب (500.000 حالة).
هذه الأرقام الموثقة وغيرها تدفعني إلى أن أفني حياتي في القراءة والبحث العليم والكتابة في مجال علم النفس العيادي لكي تتعرف البشرية قاطبة على الأمراض النفسية كأعراض وكعلاج، لذلك قررت أن أجمع في هذا الكتاب والذي هو الجزء الأول من "السلسلة النفسية" بين الرواية والعلم. فهناك علاقة وثيقة بين المادة القصصية الحية والمادة العلمية المرافقة لهذا الكتاب والتي تناولت فيها الأسس النظرية لمدرسة الدوافع النفسية (فرويد، أدلر، يونغ، كارين هروني Psychodynamic Foundations School.
وأعراض كل من الشيزوفرينيا Schizophrenia واضطرابات المزاج من كآبة مانيا بأطوراها الأحادية والثنائية أي Cylothymia والعصاب الواسواسي Obsessive compulsive disorder، كما أعطيت القارئ فكرة عن ماهية الأدوية النفسية ولمحة موجزة عن تاريخ مدرسة فرويد.
