بعد تفشي الأمراض القاتلة كالإيدز وفشل المعالجة الطبية، وبعد ظهور السرطانات وانتشارها، كان التوجه الأول نحو ما يأكله الإنسان نفسه وقد أدى ذلك إلى التوجه إلى النباتات والأعشاب الموجودة في العالم أجمع. كما ظهر الطب البديل الذي يعتمد فقط على النباتات والأعشاب وسمي بديلاً نسبة للتقليدي أي بديلاً عنه، ولكن الطب البديل أيضاً فقد بعض الامتيازات المهمة التي يتمتع بها الطب التقليدي.
لذلك ظهر ما يعرف بطب نمط الحياة وهو الطب المعني في هذا الكتاب (complementery medicin) وهو الطب المكمل حيث يتعامل الطب التقليدي مع البديل في علاج المرض وإعادة التوازن والحيوية للجسم.
يقع هذا الكتاب في ثمانية فصول خصص المؤلف كل فصل للحديث عن نوع من أنواع الأغذية (الخضروات، الفواكة، الحبوب، المكسرات، والمشروبات، الأعشاب والزهورات والتوابل، المنتوجات الحيوانية، المتفرقات)، وهو يذكر كل نوع من الأنواع وأماكن وجوده أو زراعته إضافة إلى تاريخه والأجزاء المستعملة منه، وتركيبته واستعمالاته الطبية.
ويؤكد المؤلف في هذا الكتاب أن ما يأكله الإنسان يؤثر سلباً أو إيجاباً على صحته، ومن هنا يجب توجيه المريض إلى الأغذية التي تساعد على شفاء أمراضه ومنعه من تناول المأكولات التي تعاكس مفعول الدواء الشفائي الذي يتناوله لعلاج أمراضه.
