تجري أحداث هذه الرواية في ولاية نبراسكا الأمريكيّة في بلدة سويت ووتر تحديداً، عندما جاء الأمريكيّون المغامرون الأوائل حاملين حلمهم بالغرب الأمريكيّ الجديد، بدأوا بشقّ طريقٍ للسكك الحديديّة بين البلدات لجعل تلك السهول والجبال قابلة للحياة، وأسّسوا شركة (برلينغتون)، أوّل شركة متخصّصة في بناء السكك الحديديّة، هم رجال أقوياء مثل دانيال فوريستر الّذي كان أحد أهمّ مؤسّسي الشركة ومقاوليها، بنى منزلاً له في أعلى تلّ في البلدة، وسكنه مع زوجه الحسناء الّتي كانت تصغره بأعوام كثيرة.
لم يقتصر تأثير السيدة فوريستر على زوجها ومنزلها فقط، بل عمّ على جميع الضيوف الّذين كانوا يؤمّون المنزل، وعلى جميع أهالي البلدة وفتيانها اليافعين، كانت تبعث البهجة والفرح حيثما حلّت، وتضيف سحراً خاصاً إلى تلك البيئة الريفيّة البسيطة.
تطرح ويلا كاثر قضيّة صراع المال والأخلاق في تشكّل الغرب الجديد، وصراع الشرفاء والأنذال وتفاوت الطبقات الإجتماعيّة، ثمّ تضيء على جانبٍ مهمّ من حياة سيّدة شابّة ترفض القبول بعادات المجتمع وتقاليده، بل يعتبرها بالية وتتمرّد عليها بشدّة حتّى تصبح مثار شبهات لدى الجميع، لكنّها في الوقت نفسه لم تنتصر لقضيّتها، بل انجرفت في متعها الخاصّة دون الأخذ بعين الإعتبار اسم زوجها ومكانته الإجتماعية.
في النهاية تنهار السيّدة فوريستر، وبعد وفاة زوجها تبيع المنزل وترحل بعيداً إلى كاليفورنيا لتتزوّج رجلاً ثريّاً آخر.
