اعتزم في هذا الكتاب أن أبين أن حجز العثرة الأساسي الذي يحول دون استفادة باقي العالم من الرأسمالية يتمثل في عجزه عن إنتاج رأس المال. فرأس المال هو القوة التي تزيد إنتاجية العمل وتخلق ثروة الأمم. إنه شريان الحياة بالنسبة للنظام الرأسمالي، أساس التقدم، والشئ الذي يبدو أن بلدان العالم الفقيرة لا تستطيع أن تنتجه لنفسها، مهما كان الحماس الذي تنخرط به شعوبها في كل الأنشطة الأخرى التي تميز الاقتصاد الرأسمالي.
كما سأبين، بمساعدة الحقائق والأرقام التي جمعها فريق البحث المعاون لي، من حي سكني بعد أخر، ومن مزرعة في آسيا وأفريقيا والشرق الأوسط وأمريكا اللاتينية، أن معظم الفقراء يملكون بالفعل الأصول التي يحتاجونها لتحقيق نجاح الرأسمالية. ذلك أن الفقراء يدخرون حتى في أكثر البلدان فقرا.
لكنهم يحتفظون بهذه الأصول في شكل معيب: بيوت بنيت على أرض ملكيتها ليست مسجلة بالشكل السليم، ودور أعمال لا تأخذ شكل الشركات ومسؤوليتها غير محددة.
وعلى العكس من ذلك في المغرب، فإن كل قطعة أرض، وكل بناية، وكل قطعة من المعدات، أو مخزن للموجودات، تمثلها وثيقة للملكية تشكل دليلاً مرئيا على عملية مستترة شاسعة تربط كل هذه الأصول يمكن أن تكسب حياة غير مرئية موازنة إلى جانب وجودها المادي.
ذلك هو سر رأس المال. ويتطلب حله فهم السبب في أن الغربيين استطاعوا عن طريق وصف وتمثيل الأصول بسندات ملكية، أن يروا فيها رأس المال وأن يستخلصوه منها. إن من أكبر التحديات التي تواجه العقل البشري فهم، والوصول إلى، الأشياء التي يعرف أنها موجودة ولا نستطيع أن نراها. ليس كل ما هو حقيقي ومفيد، ملموس ومرئي. فالزمن مثلا حقيقي ولكن لا يمكن إدارته بصورة كفء إلا عندما تمثله الساعة والتقويم الزمني. وعلى مر التاريخ، اخترع البشر أنظمة وصفية تمثيلية -الكتابة، النوتة الموسيقية، إمساك الدفاتر ذات القيد المزدوج -ليدركوا بالعقل ما لا يمكن لأبدي البشر أن تلمسه أبدا.
