فاماسكي ، دمشقا ، فارميساك ، دمشق الشام ، شام شريف وأخيراً دمشق الغنية عن التعريف . أسماء كثيرة أُطلقت على هذه الأرض الخصبة . تنوعت معانيها بين الأرض المسقية غزيرة مياه والأرض التي أسرع ببنائها والأرض التي أسرع أبناؤها ببناتها والأرض التي تفوح برائحة المسك الطبية .
أسماء وإن اختلفت بلفظها ومضمونها إلا أنها اجتمعت على كون هذه البقعة من الأرض ، التي تعود بتاريخها إلى ما يقارب الألف العاشر قبل الميلاد ، كانت مهداً لمجموعة من أثرى الحضارات وأغناها ثقافة وعراقة ، لعبت دوراً مهماً في رسم معالم هذه المدينة ومنحها ذاك الإرث الفكري والإجتماعي والعمراني . مدينة ، كانت شاهداً على تاريخ أمم ، تعاقبت بأجيالها على أرضها ، تحاربت فيما بينها نزاعاً على السلطة والثروات طبعاً بذلك الموقع الحيوي وسط قارات العالم الثلاث ، وبين أهم القوى اللاعبة في كل حقبة من حقب تاريخ هذه المدينة العريقة . مجموعة ميزات منحت أرضها تلك الأوابد الشامخة عبر العصور ، وأبناءها ذلك الغنى الثقافي والإجتماعي والفكري ، وتاريخها الذي جعلها وجهة العديد من البعثات الأثرية ومقصد كل باحث وأثري يثمّن تلك المخطوطات والكتب التي حاولت توصيف المدينة بكل أوابدها الأثرية وأنماط معيشة أهلها مما يجعل من الصعب على أي باحث في تاريخ دمشق أو الشام ، الكتابة عنها بشمولية .
