يُعد فريدريش كريستيان دليوس من أكثر الكتاب الألمان إهتماماً بتاريخ بلده المعاصر، لا سيما بفترة الإنتفاضة الطلابية والحركة اليسارية في الستينيات.
آنذاك كان الآلاف في برلين وباريس وبراغ يخرجون إلى الشوارع ليتظاهروا ضد جيل الآباء وحرب فيتنام وإعادة تسليح البلاد، كان شباب العالم يغلي بالتمرد والرغبة في التغيير، وكان الشعور السائد أن السلطة فاسدة في الشرق والغرب معاً، و"أن كل إنسان يطالب بأبسط الحقوق الأساسية ينال نصيبه من القمع بلا رحمة، إلى هذا الحد كانت صورة العالم مبسطة، إلا أن السؤال كان معقداً: كيف يدافع الإنسان عن نفسه؟".
في "قاتل لمدة عام" يرسم دليوس جدارية ألمانية ضخمة لمنتصف القرن العشرين، جدارية مليئة بالتفاصيل المدروسة جيداً، لكن القارئ لا يضيع في شعابها، قد يقول قائل: رواية عن النازية والستينيات في شطري ألمانيا، إنها أحداث بعيدة في أرض بعيدة - هل تهمنا؟.
لا يعيد التاريخ نفسه، لكنه يقدم دروساً تتشابه عِبَرُها؛ هذه الرواية تلقى ضوءاً كاشفاً على حقبة مظلمة في التاريخ الألماني، وتبيّن أن الجناة ليسوا بالضرورة وحوشاً آدمية.
إن التعبير الذي استخدمته الفيلسوفة هنّه آرنت عن "عادية الشر" يجد له خير تجسيد في هذا العمل، كما تظهر الرواية بجلاء أن الديمقراطية لا تولد بين يوم وليلة، وأن شعباً ساير الديكتاتور سنوات طويلة وآمن به، لن ينقلب شعباً حراً ديمقراطياً بمجرد إسقاط الطاغية.
