تعتبر رحلة كارستن نيبور (1733-1815) حلقة مهمة في سلسلة الرحلات العلمية إلى مصر، ويضم هذا المجلد الجزء الأول من أعمال البعثة التي رأسها كارستن نيبور، وضمت عالم اللغويات فون هافن، وعالم النبات والحيوان والكيمياء والجيولوجيا بيتر فورسكال، والطبيب الدكتور كرستيان كارل كرامر، والرسام جيورج فيلهلم باور ينفاليد، والخادم برجرن، والتي انطلقت من كوبنهاجن حتى خروجها من مياه مصر.
ويلاحظ أثناء قراءة الرحلة أن كارستن نيبور استعد لها علمياً استعداداً وافياً، فقرأ سترابون وبطليموس وأبا الفدا والإدريسي ورحلات من سبقه من الألمان والفرنسيين والإيطاليين والإنجليز، وفهم دوره في إطار تصحيح ما يحتاج إلى التصحيح وإثبات مالا يتطرق إليه الشك، وهو لا يكتفي بوصف الأرض والتضاريس بل يهت اهتماماً كبيراً بتسجيل ما يرى وما يسمع من أحوال الناس وأعمالهم ومساكنهم ونظام الحكم عندهم وأساليبهم في اللهو والتسلية وقد تبع كارستن نيبور جغرافيون ورحالة كثيرون أضافو تفصيلات مهمة، منهم أعضاء البعثة التي صاحبت الحملة الفرنسية (1798-1801) وأثمرت موسوعة وصف مصر، ومنهم بوركهارت (1784-1817) إن الكتاب يمثل حلقة مهمة من حلقات وصف مصر على مر العصور.
