"أسرار العربية" كتابٌ تعليمي في النحو العربي و"أسراره"، أراد المؤلف من خلاله أن يقدم لطلابه عرضاً شاملاً وميسراً لقواعد اللغة العربية، وأن يزودّهم القدرة على تفسير الظواهر اللغوية، مشيراً في الوقت عينه إلى مذاهب النحويين في المسألة الواحدة، لا سيما البصريين والكوفيين منهم.
والغاية التعليمية جعلت المؤلف يتّبع أسلوباً سهلاً واضحاً، بطريقة السؤال والجواب تقليب المسألة الواحدة على أكثر من وجه؛ هذا بلغة سلسة ومنطق إستدلالي قريب المأخذ، إلى براعة في العرض وترجيح رأي على آخر، من دون إثقال على القارئ بالتفاصيل كما في كتابه "الإنصاف في مسائل الخلاف"، لذلك نراه يحيل القارئ إلى ذاك الكتاب أو سواه.
وأسرار العربية كتابٌ تطبيقي في موضوع العلَّة النحوية متمِّمٌ لجهود ابن الأنباري النظرية في الموضوع ذاته من خلال كتابه القيّم "لُمَع الأدلّة"، ولعل قيمة الكتاب الأساسية ترجع إلى هذا الأمر.
"الأسرار" التي قصدها المؤلف هي تلك "العِلل" أو "الأسباب الخفيَّة" أو "الحكمة" التي جعلت العرب ينطقون لغتهم على النحو المعلوم من الظواهر الإعرابية، والتي ينبغي للنحوي إكتناهها، ويتضح سريعاً أن البحث في العلَّة النحوية لا يكتفي بما تقدمه نظرية "العوامل" المعروفة، وإنما يتعدَّى ذلك إلى النظر في الوضعيات اللغوية ومحاولة تفسير وجودها على هيئات معيَّنة.
