الحجاج، ككل شخصية تاريخية أثرت في معاصريها أبلغ التأثير، تحول في آخر أيامه، ثم بعد هلاكه، إلى "أسطورة" تصور البطش والظلم والقسوة.
وفي هذا الكتاب يحاول الباحث والمؤرخ "عبد اللطيف شرارة" من لبنان، على فصل الأسطورة وأجزاءها المحشوة، عن الشخصية التاريخية لدى كل حادثة أو خبر أو رواية أو تعليق، ليتمكن من إعطاء القارىء وقائع ثابتة يفيد منها الباحث في الكتابة وفي توجيه الحياة الإنسانية، ويبني على أساسها أحكامه، وإلا فقد البحث التاريخي قيمته، وأفضى إلى ضرب من التهويل والتعصب الأعمى.
يرى شرارة أن هناك ناحية أعقد من تمييز الحقائق وفصلها عن التلفيقات والأراجيف والمبالغات، وهي أن لكل شخصية تاريخية بارزة أعداء وأحباء. ولها في الناس، في الأحياء منهم، من يشجب سلوكها، ومن يحبذه.
ما يريد أن يقوله الكاتب أن المؤرخ يجب عليه الإنصاف، لأن الإنصاف ممكن برأيه، وبالتالي هو واجب، في جميع الأحوال والظروف وأن على مؤرخي السيرة وكتابها أن يلتزموا جانب الإنصاف كلما عرضوا لشخصية تاريخية مهما يكن شأنها وأثرها في الحياة.
من هنا جاءت هذه الدراسة لتطل على تاريخ الدولة الإسلامية في العصر الأموي وتسجل لنا لقطات، ومحطات من ولاية الحجاج على الحجاز ومكة مقسمة إلى أربعة محطات هي "نحو الحجاج" وفيها أحداث رافقت تأسيس الدولة الأموية والتي كان للحجاج دورا ًكبيراً في تثبيت أركانها، مروراً بفتن وثورات عاشتها الدولة الإسلامية في العصر الأموي، وصولاً إلى الإنشقاق والفوضى التي أدت إلى الإنهيار...
