أني أذكر في هذا التأليف نكتاً كثيرة مفيدة في أحوال الذين ذكرتهم في تأليفي الذي سميته: "بغية أهل البصارة في [ذيل] الإشارة"، للحافظ أبي عبد الله الذهبي، الذي أشار فيه إلى وفيات جماعة من الأعيان، لأن غالبها قد يخفى على كثير من الناس، وليتضح بذلك من حالهم ما لم يتضح في "بغية أهل البصارة"، وسبب تأليفي للبغية مسيس الحاجة إليه، فإني لم أر تأليفاً على مثال كتاب "الإشارة:، وإنما رأيت تواليف أبسط منه بكثير لعناية مؤلفيها بذكر الإنسان ومولده ووفاته وشيوخه، وبعضهم يزيد على ذلك ذكر مسموعاته وأشياء من حاله، وهذه التواليف مع كثرتها ليس في أكثرها ما في الآخر، فلا يحصل للطالب النفع إلا بإجماعها عنده، وقد لا يتيسر ذلك لكل أحد. وقد تيسر لي بحمد الله النظر في كثير منها لما شرعت في تأليفي الذي سميته "العقد الثمين في سيرة البلد الأمين"، وعلقت منها أشياء كثيرة أذكرها في هذا التأليف، وأضم إليها ما لم أره مؤلفاً مما استفدته من خط الثقات، أو من أخبارهم، أو شاهدته. وأرجو إن يسر الله لي تمام هذا التأليف أن يكون في غنية عن التواليف المشار إليها، باعتبار معرفة وفيات الأعيان المشار إليهم، والمهم في أحوالهم. وأوضحت في تأليفي هذا ما أشرت إليه في "البغية" من الحوادث التي ذكرتها في بعض السنين إيضاحاً فيه غنية عن الكتب التي بُسط فيها ذلك، وقد توجد فيما ذكرته من أمرها فوائد لا توجد في كثير من الكتب المبسوطة في هذا المعنى، وذكرت فيه - أيضاً - تراجم وحوادث لم أذكرها في "بغية أهل البصارة". وأقدم الحوادث قبل الوفيات، وأقدم - غالباً - وفيات العلماء ثم الرواة، ثم الأعيان من الملوك والأمراء وغيرهم، إلا من سنة إحدى وسبع مئة إلى سنة إحدى وأربعين وسبع مئة، فإني لم أراع ذلك، وراعيت فيما ذكرته من ذلك في السنين ترتيب حروف المعجم لكون ذلك يوافق اختيار بعض الحفاظ، وسميت هذا التأليف "إيضاح بغية أهل البصارة في ذيل الإشارة"، وقد راعيت فيه الاختصار، ولولا ذلك لجاء في أسفار.
