هل يصح الحديث عن أمر اسمه« مستقبل العروض» في مفتتح بحث موضوعه : « دراسة نقدية عن عروض الشعر العربي» ؟ من من الباحثين قد يمتلك مثل هذا الحق، وهو يخوض في البحث عن صور العلاقة بين بناءين شامخين، أولهما الشعر العربي، وثانيهما عروضه؟ ومن ذلك، لنقل: إن منهم من استطاع في مثل لمح البصر أن يضع لهذا المستقبل حدودا قريبة، تؤذن بنهاية متوقعة، أو لنقل: إن من بينهم كذلك من أعلن هذه النهاية، وأودع العروض في الرف الذي يستحقه، أولا يستحقه، في مستودع الماضي. على أن أمر مقاربة مستقبل العروض، وهو داخل دون ريب في باب المستقبليات، يتطلب الإشارة إلى أن العروض انتقل منذ مرحلة التأسيس، من وضع النموذج المستوحي من واقع الشعر العربي، وهو ما قام به الخليل ، إلى وضع المتابعة أو المسايرة أو التقليد الذي صاحب تاريخ العلوم العربية، إلى وضع الاكتشاف و تلمس الأسس، و هو ما حاول الاستشراق انجازه، إلى وضع رابع للتساؤل و محاولة بناء النموذج، وهو ما قام به الباحثون العرب بصور مختلفة.
