منذ نشأة الكويت، وطوال القرن التاسع عشر الميلادي، كان الشيعة يشكلون الركيزة الأساس في البناء الإجتماعي - الإقتصادي للكويت، وذلك من خلال المهن التي أمتهنوها والحرف التي اشتغلوا بها، وساهموا في توفير القاعدة لنمو هذا البناء، وما يحتاجه من متطلبات وإحتياجات الحياة اليومية لهذا المجتمع.
ويقول الحاج عبد الوهاب الوزان "كان أهل الكويت، أهل مهن، الذي بالبحر بالبحر، والذي بالديرة بالديرة، وأغلب أصحاب المهن والحرفيين، كلهم شيعة تقريباً، وهذه المهن (أعمال تجارية)، هي التي كانت تعطي الكويت الدور التجاري، سواءً فيما يتعلق بالضرائب، أو ما يتعلق بدعم الحكم، والشرطة، والجيش، وذلك قبل النفط".
فقد تمكن الشيعة، بل جلبوا معهم "الكثير من الصناعات الحرفية، فصناعة السفن اشتهر بها الفلاليف والندافة كانت لعائلة القطان والحدادة كانت لعائلة الحداد وصياغة الذهب لعائلة الصايغ وصناعة الأواني والأدوات المنزلية والتناكة لعائلتي الصفار والتناك، وصناعة وخياطة البشوت لعائلة البغلي"، كما انعكست مثل هذه الأنشطة بشكل واضح على ألقاب الأسر الكويتية الحرفية، مثل "النجار، الأستاذ، البناي، القطان، الجرخي، الطواش، الوزان، الصايغ، العتال، المطوع، الحداد، الخياط، الخباز،.. إلخ".
بهذه المروحة الواسعة من المهن والحرف، كان للشيعة الدور الفاعل في تفاصيل الحياة اليومية الكويتية وفي نمو مداخيل ومصالح العائلات التجارية وزيادة نفوذها ضمن معادلة المشاركة في صناعة قرارات الحكم.
