كانت الكويت واحدة من تلك الدول التي سافر إليها شباب نجد في القرن التاسع عشر وأوائل القرن العشرين للعمل وكسب الرزق.
لقد كانت نجد - قبل إكتشاف النفط - شحيحة الموارد وقليلة الفرص ومتواضعة جداً في توفير أسباب الرفاهية والحياة الجيدة لسكانها، ولذلك فقد انتشر شبابها في دول الساحل الشرقي يبحثون عن العمل، تلك الدول التي كانت تتمتّع بالإستقرار السياسي وتدبّ في أوصالها نهضة إقتصادية شاملة، واستطاع أولئك الشباب أن يعملوا في كل المهن - الرفيعة والوضيعة - بجدّ ونشاط، وبثقة عالية، وأن يثبتوا أنفسهم في تلك الدول وأن يساعدوا في نهضتها وتنميتها، كما ساعدتهم تلك الدول في تحسين أوضاع معيشتهم في نجد، من خلال ما اكتسبوه من مال وخبرة ساهماً بشكل كبير في تطوير حياتهم ومجتمعاتهم بعد ذلك.
هذه الرواية تحكي عن حياة شاب من أولئك الشباب الذين انتشروا في الأرض يبتغون من فضل الله، ثم عاد إلى وطنه وبلدته عنيزة في وسط نجد، بكل تفاصيلها البسيطة، وبكل أبعادها وآمالها العريضة، وبكل آلامها ومعاناتها المؤلمة، ليعودوا بعد ذلك إلى نجد وإلى بلدانهم وقد حققوا شيئاً من المال الذي ساعدهم في تحسين مستوى معيشتهم، وأهم من ذلك أنهم أثبتوا أنفسهم وواجهوا حياتهم الصعبة بكل صبر وعزم وأمل.
