ولد لانزا ديل فاستو سنة 1921 من عائلة صقلية نبيلة، كان منذ طفولته طالباً مجداً، أتقن لغات عدة وحاز على دكتوراه في الفلسفة، مارس الرسم والنحت والنقش والموسيقى والشعر، ولكي يتابع تجربته بمزيد من العمق قرر أن يسافر إلى الهند سنة 1936 لتكون بداية إنطلاقه في تلك الرحلة الطويلة التي قام بها سيراً على قدميه.
عما كان يبحث في تلك الأوصقاع النائية؟ تلك المساحات التي تشحذ النظر وتجعله يرى بوضوح... وضوح هو الإنعتاق، كان ينشد الحكمة، فكتب: "أصّر على أن المحبة تفوق الحكمة لذلك سأذهب إلى وأراد عند غاندي لأتعلم كيف أصبح مسيحياً أفضل.
من الغانج إلى بور سعيد يشدنا لانزا ديل فاستو، يسحبنا وراءه في مغامراته الفكرية دون أن يفقد شيئاً من روح الدعابة في أسلوبه. غاندي دعاه شانتيداس إي خادمة السلام، وهو وضع في متناول الناس حكمة الهنذ التي تمتد إلى آلاف السنين بكتابه الحج إلى الينابيع الذي أحدث ضجَة هائلة عند نشره سنة 1943.
بعد عودته إلى أوروبا جذب لانزا فاستو، كمعلمه غاندي، الكثير من التلامذة والمريدين كما وأسس على غراره جمعية إنتسب إليها أصدقاؤه من فرنسا ومن العديد من بلدان العالم.
