من جبال سورية ولبنان، انحدروا بقاماتهم الممشوقة بقدرتهم على العمل والأحلام بتوقهم للحياة، وبشجاعتهم الحازمة. لقد اخترقوا البحر المحيط ونزلوا البرازيل. وفي اليوم التالي كانوا برازيليين، من أعرق البرازيليين، ومن أوضحهم ملامح، وأشدهم وطنية. إن الدم العربي قد لعب دوراً من أكبر الأدوار شأناً في ديموقراطيتنا العرقية، في مساهمتنا بالثقافة العالمية، وفي نزوعنا الإنساني، لقد اندمج السوريون واللبنانيون والعرب من البقاع الأخرى أيضاً، مع البرتغالي ومع الزنجي ومع السلافي ومع الإيطالي ومع الياباني وغيرهم في هذا الخليط العجيب الذي أنجب الإنسان البرازيلي، وفي وسط هؤلاء كان العربي، برازيلياً صميمياً منذ اليوم الأول. إنه ها هنا في الحكم، في البرلمان، وفي الفنون، وفي الأدب. إنه يعمل في الأرض، ويؤرث التجارة، ويخلق الصناعة، بقدرته على العمل والأحلام. ومع هذه الرابطة العميقة فإن أحدنا لا يعلم شيئاً عن الآخر، ما الذي نعلمه عن أرومتنا العربية، عن ثقافتها، عن فنها، عن أدبها. لا شيء أو تقريباً لا شيء، ما الذي يعلمونه هم عنا أيضاً لا شيء، إن بين سورية والبرازيل كل هذا الدم الجامع، كل هذه الأخوة، كل هذه الحياة المعاشة، ونحن مع ذلك، كالغربيين.
