من أهم الأحداث التي عرفتها الفلسفة المعاصرة هناك حدثان بارزان: يتمثل الأول في الثورة العلمية في مجال العلوم الدقيقة كالرياضيات والفيزياء والبيولوجيا، ويتمثل الثاني في ظهور ما يسمى بالعلوم الإنسانية كعلم النفس وعلم الإجتماع والأنثروبولوجيا.
وقد استفادت الفلسفة المعاصرة من هذين الحدثين، فاتجه إهتمامها أولاً إلى دراسة ونقد المعرفة العلمية في إطار ما يسمى بالدراسات الإبستملوجية، واتجه إهتمامها ثانياً إلى دراسة الإنسان والإهتمام بقضاياه الأساسية، كمسألة الإدراك والوعي وعلاقتهما بالعالم، وكذلك البحث عن معنى الوجود الإنساني ومعالجة القضايا السياسية والإجتماعية.
كما يمكن أن نشير أيضاً إلى إهتمام كثير من الفلاسفة المعاصرين بنقد المفاهيم الفلسفية الكلاسيكية، في محاولة منهم لتجاوز الفلسفة الميتافيزيقية وإعادة الإعتبار للجوانب المهمشة واللامفكرة فيها.
