إن الجمال هو الحقيقة التي تجذب الإنسان بإلحاح، والجمال صفة إنسانية عامة وهو فوق الخير والحق، إذ إن ما هو خير وحق فهو جميل باللزوم، ولكن ليس كل ما هو جميل خير وحق، فالجمال هو الصفة العامة المطلقة ولذلك فهو حقيقة إنسانية يسعى وراءها الفنان المبدع.
لقد قسمت هذه الدراسة على أربعة فصول وتوطئة، وفي التوطئة تحدث الكاتب عن حياة الأخطل بشكل مختصر ومكانته الادبية والإجتماعية عند الخلفاء والنقاد.
أما الفصل الأول فخصص لمعنى الجمال وقيمته وابتعد عن الفلسفة البحتة وحاول أن يضع أسساً نقدية للجمال الحسي والمعنوي في ذلك العصر من خلال آراء الفلاسفة والنقاد وتطابقها مع ما جاء في ديوان الأخطل، أما الفصل الثاني فخصص للجمال البشري من حيث إدراك الجمال لدى الجنسين - أحدهما للآخر - فالرجل يرى في المرأة جمالها الحسي وجمالها الأخلاقي عنده مكمل لذلك الجمال، فيعشقها كتمثال للجمال المتناهي القريب من صنعة الخالق.
أما الفصل الثالث فخصص لدراسة - جمال التصوير - تصوير الطبيعة والخمرة لأن الأخطل أبدع في تصويرهما، فالصحراء فضاء الشاعر الرحب يمتد به البصر - مسافات شاسعة فلا يقف في سبيله عائق فهي بيته السعيد ينتقل في أرجائها وينعم بخبراتها ويروي من عذب مائها ويعشق سمائها المتلألئة بالنجوم وصور كل هذا الجمال تصويراً دقيقاً ملوناً بعواطفه وأحاسيسه إزاءها من غير زيف.
أما الفصل الرابع فخصص لجمال اللغة ومصادرها عنده، وجمالها الإيقاعي - الموسيقي - فاللغة تقتضي من الشاعر أن يكون مستوعباً لمفرداتها وأساليبها الصحيحة الفصيحة في التعبير والأداء.
