يعتبر الكتاب حلقه فى سلسلة من الكتب فى هذا أعنى "الحب" وقد نال جانبا من اهتمام أدباء العربية منذ أقدم العصور فقد ألف فيه تاليفا مستقلاً محمد بن داود الظاهرى كتاب الزهرة، وابن حزم الأندلسى طوق الحمامة، وجرى المؤلفون على هذا المنهج فى التأليف الخاص، أو إفراد موضوع الحب بحديث فى مؤلف وحده حتى عصرنا وكتاب "ديوان الصبابة" يكتسب أهمية خاصة بين هذه المؤلفات جميعا بما قدمه من دراسة مقتسمة على أبواب ثلاثين بدأت بذكر الحسن والجمال وما قيل فيهما، وذكر العشق وأسمائه وتعريفه واسبابه وما إلى ذلك حتى الباب الثلاثين فى ذكر من اتصف من العفاف بأحسن الأوصاف.
وبدأ بمدقمة حدد فيها موضوع كتابه، وأنه جاء فيه بما لم يأت به الأوائل والكتاب جامع لكثير من أخبار العشاق، وشعر الشعراء من قدماء ومحدثين وعصريين أى معاصرين المؤلف أو قبله من المصريين وغيرهم من المشارقة والمغاربة والأندلسيين، كما يضم قدراً وافرا من منظمة وقد ضمن المقدمة قصيدة طويلة فى السلطان حسن
