يضمّ الكتاب وصفاً وعرضاً مفصلاً لما جرى في أثناء عدد من الرحلات إلى العلامة القاضي الشيخ عبد الله بن عقيل، بقصد الاستفادة من علمه والاستزادة من تعليقاته وتقريراته ومجمل أقواله، مما قرئ بين يديه في مجلسه العامر بالخير بالرياض، وذلك مما يسر الله تعالى للمؤلف تقييده أثناء القراءة عليه، أو أثناء الاستماع لمن يقرأ بين يديه، وعليه فإن هذا الكتاب يعدّ بمثابة سجل موثق لما شاهده المؤلف وسمعه أثناء جملة من اللقاءات في اليوم والليلة في مجلس الشيخ ليقف عليها طلاب العلة، وليعلموا فضل هذا العالم الجيل والحبر النبيل، لدفع هممهم إلى المعالي، وليحذوا حذوه في إشاعة الخير بين الناس. والشيخ العقيل هو العلاّمة العامل الفقيه القاضي عبد الله بن عبد العزيز بن عقيل أبو عبد الرحمن العَنَزي، نسبة إلى بلدة عُنَيْزَة، ويرجع أصلهم إلى المدينة المنورة، إلى الأنصار الخزرج. كانت ولادته في عنيزة 1917/1335م. كان والده معلمه الأول إذا كان وجيهاً من وجهاء عنيزة ومن كبار أدبائها وشعرائها، إذن نشأ الشيخ في بيت علم. درس العلوم الأولية في مدرسة صالح ابن صالح ثم في مدرسة الداعية المصلح الشيخ عبد الله القرعاوي. كما استفاد من الشيخ عبد الله بن مانع والشيخ عبد الله المطرودي والشيخ محمد بن علي التركي، والشيخ سليمان العمري، فقرأ عليهم صحيح البخاري والزاد ومنظومات العقيدة ومختلف الفنون، ونظراً لعلمه واجتهاده تمّ اختياره في مطلع شبابه (ثمانية عشر عاماً) بأمر من الملك عبد العزيز ليكون مع القضاة والمرشدين إلى منطقة جيزان.
وبعد تنقله في هذا العمل تمّ تعينه سنة 1365 في محكمة الخرج ثم تمّ نقله إلى المحكمة الكبرى في الرياض وقد كان ذلك في شواء سنة 1366. ظلّ الشيخ قاضياً في الرياض حتى سنة 1370هـ إلى أن أمر الملك عبد العزيز بنقله قاضياً لعنيزة مسقط رأسه، حيث لم يمنعه منصبه وموقعه من متابعة دروسه وظلّ قاضياً لعنيزة لحين تعينه عضواً في دار الإفتاء في رمضان 1375هـ. وتجدر الإشارة إلى أنه تمّ اختيار الشيخ عبد الله ابن عقيل لعضوية مجلس الأوقاف الأعلى إبان إنشائه في سنة 1387هـ، واستمر في عضويته إلى جانب أعماله التي تقلدها حتى بلغ السن النظامي للتقاعد في سنة 1405هـ. وبعد تقاعده لم يتوقف الشيخ عن توصيل العلم، فما يكاد يُرى إلا معلماً أو موجهاً ومدرساً.
