في إطار مشروع "تاريخ الدول الإسلامية" يتناول ذلك الكتاب الذي طبعه مجمع التاريخ التركي في أنقرة في مجلد واحد تاريخ العالم التركي على مدى حقبة تقرب من عشرة قرون. وبعد ذلك حاول المركز أن يستكتب عدداً من الباحثين الأتراك كتاباً يتناول التاريخ العثماني في مجمله, ليكون جزءاً من المشروع السابق, فكان المجلد الأول من ذلك العمل هو هذا الكتاب الذي نقدمه اليوم للقراء. وقد خططنا له أن يقع في مجلدين تحت عنوان "الدولة العثمانية تاريخ وحضارة" ويشتمل المجلد الأول هذا على المرحلة التي تبدأ بظهور الإمارة العثمانية في غرب الأناضول, وتنتهي بانهيار الدولة العثمانية وظهور جمهورية تركيا وعدد من الدول العربية والبلقانية. وسوف يلاحظ القارئ أن هذا المجلد يتناول موضوعات التاريخ السياسي للدولة العثمانية (من قيام الدولة حتى سنة 1774م, ثم من ذلك التاريخ حتى نهاية الإمبراطورية) والنظم الإدارية والعسكرية والحقوق والاقتصاد والمالية وتركيب المجتمع العثماني. أما المجلد الثاني من هذا الكتاب فسوف يتناول جوانب الحضارة الإسلامية في صيغتها العثمانية والحياة الدينية في المجتمع واللغة والأدب وتاريخ الفنون والعمارة والموسيقى والحياة الفكرية والعلمية والتعليمية.
