تتناول هذه الدراسة الفلسفة الفرنسية منذ نشأتها في القرن السادس عشر حتى يومنا هذا، كما وترقى بالبحث إلى ما قبل هذا التاريخ، فتأتي على ذكر كل من اشتهر في العصر الفرنسي الوسيط من فلاسفة وأدباء، منوّهةً على الأخص في ميدان الفلسفة العلمية، بمدرسة باريس الشهيرة.
... وبالرغم من كلِّ هذا، أظلُّ حرّاً طليقاً، إنَّ نظرية سارتر في الحرية لأبعد من أن تكون نظرية ساذجة يسيرة، يقول سارتر بلسان أحد أشخاص تمثيليَّة له: "محكوم علينا بأن نكون أحراراً".
ولكن ما معنى أن يكون الإنسان حرّاً؟ الطريف هنا عند سارتر، تقريره أنَّنا دائماً أحراراً على قدر سواه، فالسجين حرًّ، كأي إنسان آخر يُحسَب حرّاً، لا تفاوت بدرجات الحرية.
من الطبيعي أن تكون إمكانات العمل، على أنواع شتَّى، أمَّا الحرية، فكلٌّ لا يتجزَّأ ولا يعتورها أي نقص حتى عندما نكون عبيداً أرقَّاء؛ إنَّ ما قام به سارتر في حقل السياسة والإجتماع، ونداءه الذي توجَّه به إلى قارئيه، كلُّ ذلك يُنبئنا بعزم سارتر على المضي شطر العمل الأصيل، وعلى التأكيد بأن العمل الأصيل والكلمة الأصيلة، في حيِّز الإمكان.
