ليلة النصف من شعبان هي ليلة من الليالي المباركة، التي يتجلى الله فيها على خلقه بعموم مغفرته، وشمول رحمته، فيغفر للمستغفرين، ويرحم المسترحمين، ويجيب دعاء السائلين، ويفرج عن المكروبين، ويعتق فيها جماعة من النار، ويكتب فيها الأرزاق والأعمال.
وقد كتب العلماء فيها الكثير من الرسائل والمؤلفات، وكان منهم العلامة الأزهري المحدث نجم الدين الغيطي رحمه الله تعالى، الذي استهل مؤلفه بالحديث عن أوائل سورة الدخان، كمقدمة تأسيسية للحديث عن ليلة النصف من شعبان، فعدّد أسماءها، وسرد ما ورد من أحاديث في شأن العتق من النيران فيها، وتحدث عن خصائصها وفضلها، وبيَّن المشروع والممنوع في إحيائها، بكل أمانة علمية وموضوعية تدل على رسوخ قدم مؤلفها.
