ويوضح هذا الكتاب أن نظام الرهائن كان وسيلة من الوسائل التي استخدمها الحكام على إمتداد التاريخ اليمني القديم والوسيط والحديث لإخضاع الشعب، وضمان ولاء الأسر والقبائل القوية التي يخشى الحاكم أن تهدد حكمه.
كما أن هذا النظام لم يقتصر على اليمن وحده، بل هو نظام مغرق في القدم مارسه الفراعنة والأشوريون والبابليون والفرس والرومان، وغيرهم من الدول والحضارات القديمة، مما يشير إلى أن التجربة الإنسانية متشابهة في كثير من ملامحها وتجاربها رغم إختلاف الزمن وتباين البلدان والحضارات.
