"الرهينة" علامة بارزة في مسيرة القصة العربية حاولت أملي نصر الله من خلالها أن تُكسب الرواية العربية لوناً خاصاً من البعد النفسي والمنحى الفكري.
لقد أرادت من الأدب أن يستشرف آفاقاً بين الواقع وسوابقه ولواحقه ليفهم الإنسان سرّ وجوده لا وجوده فحسب، رواية تختصر عصراً، وترسم واقعاً تاريخياً وإنسانياً.
