حركة التنصير، أو حركة التبشير كما يسميها البعض، هي إحدى إفرازات الحركة الصليبية، بل أحد وجهيها، فقد تأسست لتحقيق أهداف هذه الحركة، وفي ظلها وبجهودها نبتت، وبين ظهرانيها نمت وترعرعت، وتبعاً لذلك، مرت بنفس أدوار القوة والضعف التي مرت بها، فكانت مثلها ومعها تخرج من طور لتدخل في طور جديد.
وإذا كان العديد من مؤرخي الحركة الصليبية قد عالجوا في كتاباتهم أحد أطوار هذه الحركة، هو الممتد بين أواخر القرن الحادي عشر وأواخر القرن الثالث عشر للميلاد، وهو الطور النشط ا لذي شنت فيه أوروبا الغربية هجومها الكبير على العالم العربي والإسلامي، والذي تم التعارف على تسميته مؤخراً بالحروب الصليبية، مغفلين بذلك ما سبقه وما تلاه من أطوار، وناظرين إليه على أنه هو مرحلة الصراع الإسلامي الصليبي الوحيدة، فإن هذه النظرة قد بدأت تتغير منذ القرن الماضي في ضوء المعطيات التاريخية المتلاحقة، حتى كادت تتلاشى، ولم يعد يتشبث بها إلا القلة من المغرضين أو من الذين عرفوا بالسطحية وضيق الأفق، فإن هذه المعالجة قد تركزت في معظمها على وجه واحد من وجهي هذا الصراع هو الجانب العسكري، في حين أن الوجه الآخر على أهميته لم يحظ إلا بالقدر القليل من اهتمام الباحثين، حتى كادت الحقائق المتصلة به تختفي تقريباً تحت ستار كثيف من الغموض والتشكيك والتعتيم المتعمد في أحيان عديدة صرفاً للأذهان عن تلك الحقائق، الأمر الذي أرى معه أنه لا بد من العمل على إزاحة هذا الستار، وتسليط قدر من الضوء على هذه الحركة لتوضيح أهدافها وأبعادها.
في هذا الإطار يأتي البحث الذي بين يدينا والذي يهدف لتسليط الضوء على حركة التنصير، مفهوم الحركة، اسمها، موقف المسيحيين الشرقيين والغربيين في هذه الحركة، نشأة هذه الحركة، اتجاهها إلى بلاد المسلمين، محاولات تنصير المغول، تأثر المغرب العربي بحركة التنصير، نشاط حركة التنصير حتى مطلع العصر الحديث، حركة التنصير والكشوفات الجغرافية، جهود الكاردينال لافيجيري في ميدان حركة التنصير، حركة التنصير والاستشراق.
