هذا الكتاب محاولة متواضعة لدراسة نشاط المؤسسات التنصيرية الغربية في عمان منذ وصول القسيس الإنجليزي هنري مارتن مسقط في 1226هـ/1811م حتى نهاية الدور التنصيري الذي قامت به ما عرفت باسم –الإرسالية العربية- الأمريكية المنشأ- التي اتخذت عمان ميداناً لنشاطها ابتداء من 1311هـ/1893م إلى 1390هـ/1970م. ويحاول الكتاب كذلك أن يربط ماضي نشاط المؤسسات التنصيرية بفكرها المعاصر من خلال مناقشة مفهوم الحوار بين النصرانية والإسلام كنموذج جديد في إطار العلاقة بين العالمين النصراني والإسلامي، وعلاقة ذلك بالمفهوم المعاصر للتنصير كما سبكته عقول منظري الكنائس الغربية وقادتها. والكتاب، لذلك، وصفي في بعض جوانبه، يكتفي بسرد الأحداث التاريخية، وتحليلي/تفسيري في بعض الجوانب الأخرى، يحلل الوقائع ويقدم تفسير للأحداث والنتائج.
وبسبب أهمية هذا الموضوع من وجهة نظري، ورغبتي في أن أقدم عملاً متكاملاً أكثر منه موجزاً، حاولت أن أجعل هذا الكتاب شاملاً أكبر قدر ممكن من جزئيات الموضوع، ومقدماً تغطية للجوانب التي لم تتطرق إليها الدراسات والمؤلفات التي عنيت بمناقشة هذه القضية على مستويات أعم –كالتنصير في الخليج، أو الوطن العربي، أو العالم الإسلامي. لذا فقد يبدو هذا الكتاب مفصلاً في بعض مواضعه بشكل مستفيض، أو أكثر إسهاباً مما يتوقع أو يفضل القارئ الكريم.
ومراعاة للدقة في نقل المعلومة وتوصيلها للقارئ، وتجنباً للوقوع في الأخطاء والمغالطات التاريخية، فقد اعتمدت على المراجع والمصادر التي كتبها المنصرون أنفسهم، أو من يعبر باسمهم عن نشاطهم التنصيري كمصادر أولية لمادة هذا الكتاب. وقد تجنبت الأخذ من الكتب والمؤلفات الثانوية التي يمكن أن تخل بصحة المعلومة، ومصداقية الكتاب. كما تجنبت للسبب نفسه، الاعتماد على النقل الشفوي لرواية الأحداث.
