إن البلاغة إنما سمّيت بلاغة لإبلاغ المتكلم حاجته بحسن إفهام السامع. والعرب تمدح فترفع، وتهجو فتضع، فإذا مدحت الشيء بلطافتها وذلاقة ألسنتها اختير وبسط عذره، كما غطت بالهجاء محاسنه. و"الإيضاح" الكتاب الذي نقلب صفحاته، وكما ذكر الخفاجي، عمل جليل في البلاغة سواء في ترتيبه وتقسيمه وتنظيم أبوابه، أم في استيعابه واستقصائه وتحليله، أم في جمعه واستمداده من مختلف المصادر والمراجع، أم في أسلوبه الأدبي وروحه، وكثر تطبيقاته الأدبية وهو إلى ذلك أمثل كتب البلاغة أسلوباً، وأجملها بياناً، وأوفاها بحثاً، وقد جمع فيه المؤلف كثيراً من آراء ونظريات المتقدمين في البلاغة وخصوصاً عبد القاهر الجرجاني في إمام البلاغة والسكاكي فيلسوفها.
