التعبير الاصطلاحي أحد أشكال التعبيرات الثابتة شأنه في ذلك شأن الأمثال بيد أنه يتميز منها بخلوه من القصة التي يشتهر بها المثل، ويبعده عن النزوع إلى الوعظ حيث يوظف التعبير الاصطلاحي في وصف موقف، أو توضيحه، أو في خدمة التواصل بين أفراد المجتمع، وقد جعلنا خطة هذا الكتاب بأن يدور الفصل الأول منه حول مفهوم التعبير الاصطلاحي، والمصطلحات التي استخدمها اللغويون العرب والغربيون في دراسة هذه الظاهرة، أما الفصل الثاني فيعرض لعدد من الخصائص الدلالية والتركيبية التي يحملها التعبير الاصطلاحي، أما الفصل الثالث فهو حصر لأنماط تركيب التعبير الاصطلاحي، حيث اتبع طرق نظم تلك التعبيرات أو طرق تعلق بعضها ببعض، وألفت إلى بعض التعبيرات التي تحمل تركيباً صوتياً وتركيباً دلالياً وتخلو من التركيب النحوي، وأشير لبعض مظاهر الخروج عن القياس، وأتحدث عن مكنة إعادة تشغيل العلاقات داخل التعبير الاصطلاحي.
ونجد بعد الفصول الثلاثة الأولى مجموعة من الفصول التي تتناول روافد إمداد لغتنا بهذا النوع من التعبيرات، وطرائق العربية في ترجمة التعبيرات الاصطلاحية الوافدة إلينا، ومناقشة أمر الجمود الدلالي لتلك التعبيرات وتغيرها، ويهتم الفصل الأخير بالحديث عن مجالات استخدام التعبير الاصطلاحي في الصحافة.
