هذا الكتاب دراسة موجزة عن أثينا في القرن الخامس ق.م. وقد بيّن فيها المؤلف بصورة عامة وبناء على الدراسات التاريخية الدقيقة، مركز أثينا وقيمة تلك الفترة التاريخية التي تعرف "بأثينا في عهد بركليس".
وبإزدياد المعلومات التي أسفرت عنها البحوث المركزة التي تدور حول أثينا القديمة يتحتم على الكاتب الذي يتناول هذا الموضوع أن يلم إلماماً شاملاً بأهمية هذه الفترة ككل؛ وفضلاً عن هذا عليه أن يفسر، إذا كان ذلك في حيز الإمكان، لماذا أصبحت أثينا، في تلك الفترة، ذات شأن خطير في بلاد الأغريق.
ولا شك في أنه يسهل علينا فهم تاريخ أثينا في عهد بركليس إذا عرفنا شيئاً عن تاريخ الفترة التي سبقت الفترة التي هذا الكتاب بصددها، وإذا عرفنا شيئاً عن الدور الذي لعبته اثينا في الفترة التي تلت ذلك العهد.
لهذا توجه إهتمام الكاتب إلى كلتا الفترتين، السابقة لعهد بركليس واللاحقة له، إلا أنه ركز إهتمامه على المدينة عندما بلغت الذروة في عظمتها، وقد عرض أمام القارئ أهم المزايا التي تميزت بها تلك الفترة وبيّن خطورة شأنها، فأسفرت الدراسة عن صورة لمجتمع كثير التعقيد، كما هو شأن كل حضارة عظيمة، بما تعكسه تلك الصورة من مفاخر ومآت مجيدة، ومن عيوب وأخطاء.
