جمع الدكتور ألبير نصري نادر في هذا الكتاب رسائل إخوان الصفاء وهي اثنتين وسبعين نصاً مختلفاً، ثم ترتيبها في الكتاب في اثني عشر فصلاً حسب الترتيب الآتي: 1- نظام جماعتهم، 2- أجناس العلوم وقيمتها، 3- اعتمادهم على العقل، 4- الإلهيات: الله وصفاته، 5- صدور العالم عن الله، 6- الإنسان: الطبيعة البشرية (وحاجة الإنسان إلى التعاون)، 7- الدين - الأنبياء - الشرائع، 8- حثهم على الزهد، 9- الأخلاق، 10- خلود النفس: الجنة والنار، 11- نشوء الدول وتعاقبها، 12- الحدود والرسوم (تعريفات) .
وبناءً على هذا التقسيم بدأ المؤلف بالتقديم لهذه النصوص بعرض موجز للوضع السياسي في القرن الرابع الهجري، وهو الزمن الذي بدأت فيه هذه الرسائل، كما ستعرض مختلف الآراء المهمة الخاصة بعلاقة إخوان الصفا بالشيعة الإسماعيلية والباطنية، وما قيل عن مصنفي الرسائل، وعن هدفهم.
أما الغاية أو الهدف الذي أراد المؤلف عن نشر هذه النصوص "من رسائل إخوان الصفاء وخلان الوفاء" وهو العنوان الذي اختاره الكتاب، هو أن يقدم للقارئ أهم النواحي المختلفة التي تطرق إليها الإخوان في رسائلهم، وأرفق ذلك بمقتطفات عنها، وبهذا ينتهي القارىء بفكرة عامة شاملة عما جاء في هذه الرسائل مرتبة حسب المسائل والمواضيع.
