مؤلف هذا الكتاب الدكتور أحمد مناعي عاد إلى بلده الأصلي تونس، بعد أن غاب طويلًا في القيام بعمله في الأمم المتحدة كخبير دولي. كان يريد الاحتفال بأعياد رمضان مع عائلته. وتعرض للملاحقة والتوقيف من قبل المخابرات الخاصة التابعة للرئيس بن علي الذي تسلم السلطة إثر انقلاب عسكري في عام 1987، ثم أعيد انتخابه بدون أية مصاعب.. وكان المرشح الوحيد للرئاسة!
كان مناعي قد ارتكب خطأ بالتجرؤ على تحدي النظام الجديد بتقديم ترشيحه المستقل للانتخابات التشريعية التي جرت في عام 1989. وشكل الاضطهاد الذي تعرض له الكاتب صدمة كبيرة لأولاده وزوجته الذين كانوا قد اعتبروا رهائن لدى السلطة الحاكمة في تونس. لكنه اضطر للبقاء في المنفى واستطاع الالتقاء مجددًا مع عائلته التي تمكنت من القيام بمغامرة الهروب من تونس.
قراءة هذا الكتاب تحبس الأنفاس وتخلق الغصة تلو الغصة لدى محبي الحرية والديمقراطية وحقوق الإنسان. ويقدم الكتاب صورة عن "تونس الأخرى" بعيدًا عن الاحتفالات الفولكلورية، وتدعو للتفكير حول الحاضر والمستقبل في هذا البلد العربي، وفي الكثير من البلدان الأخرى. ويخلط منه رعب "التعذيب التونسي" مع طموحات ديمقراطي مسلم غير منتمي لأي حزب ولا يمكن تصنيفه ضمن هذه الفئة أو تلك.
