لا يختلف اثنان اليوم على أن السياحة أصبحت من ضرورات الحياة لكافة الأمم والدول والشعوب والأفراد، ولا يسع المجال هنا للإستطالة بالشرح لكن يكفي القول أن السياحة كادت تمثل ثاني أكبر رقم في التبادل الإقتصادي العالمي بعد النفط لولا ظهور ثورة الإلكترونيات والإتصالات التي أخذت أرقام تجارتها الدولية تذهل العقول، فكما في حالة النفط، كذلك في القطاعين الآخرين (السياحة والإلكترونيات) فإن بعض الدول استولت عالمياً على اللب وتركت الفئات لدول العالم الأخرى.
تعدد وتتنوع السياحة تبعاً للهدف الذي تحرك من أجله السائح؛ فمن كان زيارته لأجل البيئة فهو سائح بيئي، ومن كان هدفه زيارة الآثار والمتاحف فهو سائح ثقافي؛ وهكذا، ولكل واحدة من هذه الأنواع خصائصها ومعاييرها التي تميزها عن النوع الآخر، إذ يسعى الباب الأول من هذا الكتاب إلى تغطية مبسطة لمفهوم السياحة بشكل عام، وأنواعها ومفهوم وخصائص كل نوع.
أما الباب الثاني من الكتاب فيسعى إلى بيان مفهوم السياحة البيئية وجذورها التاريخية وعلاقتها بالأنواع الأخرى من السياحة وحجم الطلب عليها عالمياً، وفيما يتعلق بالباب الثالث فقد جاء لبيان الخصائص العامة للسياحة البيئية وقواعدها وبيان مفهوم طاقة الحمل وعلاقتها بالسياحة البيئية ثم مفهوم النزل البيئية وأهم معاييرها؛ أما الباب الثالث فقد جاء لتوضيح أهم الفاعلون في مجال السياحة البيئية من المنظمات الحكومية والخاصة وشبه الحكومية وكذلك الأطراف المساندة والأساسية في إنجاح المشاريع السياحية البيئية، والمناطق المحمية، أما الباب الخامس فقد خصص للحديث عن العلاقة بين السياحة البيئية والمنظمات غير الحكومية، والباب الأخير لتوضيح العلاقة بين السياحة البيئية وصناعة السياحة بشكل عام.
