"ما الذي يعنيه القولُ إننا نعيش في عصر علماني؟"، هذا هو السؤال الذي يطرحه تشارلز تايلور في العبارات الأولى التي يستهلّ بها كتابه الموسوم بــ "عصر العلماني"، وبالنظر إلى حجم الكتاب ومكانةِ مؤلِّفه كأحد المفكرين الروّاد في عصرنا، فإن عصر العلماني يطالب بإشتباك جادٍّ مع ما يتضمنه من محتوى.
لهذا السبب نضع بين أيديكم هذا المؤلَّف؛ وفيه يقدِّم علماء - ينتمون إلى مجالات مختلفة - تحليلاتهم الخاصة لعمل تايلور من خلال مجموعة من الدراسات التي تمّ جمعُها هنا؛ آملين أنّ تلقي النتيجة الضوء على شيء من التعقيد الذي يطاول مسألةَ العلمانية، والكثافةَ التحليلية التي استخدمها تايلور لسبر أغوارها، وتنوُّعَ النقاشات التي أثارها كتاب عصر العلماني.
تحدّد المجموعة الأولى من الدراسات صلة تايلور بالتقاليد الفكرية كمقارنته بمنظّرين إجتماعيين في فترة ما بعد الحرب، وقراءة نقده للحداثة في علاقته بتاريخ طويل من اللاهوت المسيحي، ومقارنة مشروعه بالمادية التاريخية لدى ماركس.
أما المجموعة الثانية منا لدراسات فقد اعتبرت كتاب تايلور إستفزازي فكانت قراءات مؤلّفيها نقدية وكانت ردوداً على عصر العلماني بصورة أساسية.
تعالج المجموعة اللاحقة من الدراسات مشكلات الشكل والمنهج من خلال الإجابة عن الآتي: نوع الكتاب؟ مفهومه للتاريخ؟ والتحديات التي يفرضها... أما المجموعة الاخيرة من الدراسات فهي تحليل للعلماني في ظلّ الظروف العالمية وكانت تقييماً لكتاب تايلور من وجهة نظر الكيفية؛ إذ عمدت إلى إضفاء صبغة إقليمية على تركيز تايلور على اللاتينية المسيحية.
اختتم الكتاب بكلمة تايلور فيها دعوة صريحة لمواصلة النقاش، فقدّم عرضاً للسردية الرئيسة للعلمانية، وأعاد النظر في مفهومه عن "المخيال الإجتماعي"، واستجاب لمنتقدي مفهومه عن "الإكتمال".
