كتب كرين برينتن "تشريح الثورة" عام 1938 وأعيد طبعه عام 1956، ووسعه برينتن عام 1964.
يحلل مؤلف الكتاب ميول مجتمع يسبق ثورة كبرى، وهو يرى أنه يجمع بين التوترات الإجتماعية والسياسية بسبب التدهور التدريجي لقيم المجتمع.
إن فكرته عن الثورة هي أنها عملية قلب السلطة مما يؤدي إلى تولي المتطرفين السلطة ثم تهدأ الأمور، وقد شبه الثورة بحمى ترتفع بسبب شكاوى أفراد شعب ما.
ومن أعراض هذه الحمى إنهيار هيكل السلطة، تستعر الحمى ثم يصبح واضحاً أن الناس لا يتحملون تلك الحمى وتحل سلطة أفضل محل هذا الإهتياج ويصبح الشعب أسعد.
إن فكرة برينتن عن الثورة هي أنها في الحقيقة جدول معين للأحداث التي يفترض أنها تحدث؛ إنها تظهر التغيير والحمى وحسم الثورة، ويرى برينتن أن الثورة عبارة عن عملية وأنه لا يحدث تغيير جوهري من مرحلة ما قبل الثورة إلى مرحلة ما بعد الثورة، غير أن نظرية برينتن استندت إلى الثورة قبل عام 1945.
