هناك دراسات حديثة في الإعلام، والذي يتناول مهاماً متنوعة، تتمثل في موضوع نشر الأخبار إلى موضوع الترفيه، والتسلية خصوصاً بعد الثورة التلفزيونية، وإنتشارها الواسع، حيث تطلق على التكنولوجيا التي تقوم بمهمة الإعلام، والمؤسسات التي تديرها اسم وسائل الإعلام، كما يُطلق على الأخيرة تعبير السلطة الرابعة للإشارة إلى تأثيرها العميق، والواسع.
ومن أهم وظائفها تمثيل الرأي العام، وتمثيل مؤسسات، ومنها الإعلان التجاري، والتسويق، والدعاية، والتواصل مع الجمهور، والتواصل السياسي، والترفيه مثل التمثيليات والموسيقى والرياضة والقراءة العامة، ثم ظهر خلال أواخر القرن الماضي الفيديو، وألعاب الحاسوب، كذلك تقديم خدمات للجمهور، وإعلانات، والتعليم والإرشاد.
كما تتعدد أنواع وسائل الإعلام في عصرنا الحديث، ونجد من بينها ثلاثة أنواع مهمة، كالإعلام المكتوب (المطبوع)، كالجرائد، والمجلات وغيرها، والإعلام المرئي، ويقصد به التلفاز، والحاسوب، والإعلام المسموع، ويعني به الإذاعة، أو الراديو، بالإضافة إلى الإنترنت من خلال بعض المواقع، ووسائل التواصل الإجتماعية الحديثة مثل الفيس بوك والواتس اب.
وتعتبر الصحافة مهنة ذات طابع خاص، إذا أنها تسعى دائماً للوصول إلى الحقيقة، وللتحدث عن كل ما يشعر به الجمهور، حيث أنها تقوم بحصر الأخبار، ومحاولة التأكد من صحتها، ومن ثم تقوم بتقديمها إلى الجمهور، وذلك من خلال العديد من الوسائل؛ كالتلفاز، ومواقع الإنترنت، والإذاعة، والمجلات، والصحف المكتوبة أو الإلكترونية.
