يعد الإقتصاد القياسي أحد فروع العلوم الإقتصادية المستخدمة للأساليب الكمية في تحليل الظواهر الإقتصادية، فلقد ساعد التطور في النظرية الإحصائية والإقتصادية وثورة المعلومات على حدوث تطور كبير في مجال الإقتصاد القياسي خلال فترة زمنية قصيرة.
لقد استُخدم لفظ إقتصاد قِياسي Econometrics لأول مرة سنة 1926، إن أصل هذا المصطلح Econometrics يوناني ويتكون من مقطعين هما Economic أي علم الإقتصاد وMetrics أي القياس (المتر) ويعرفه البعض بأنه القياس في الإقتصاد، وبصورة أكثر تفصيلاً هو العلم الذي يهتم بقياس العلاقات الإقتصادية من خلال بيانات واقعية، بغرض إختبار مدى صحة هذه العلاقات كما تقدمها النظرية، أو تفسير بعض الظواهر، أو رسم بعض السياسات، أو التنبؤ بسلوك بعض المتغيرات الإقتصادية.
إن غالبية العلاقات التي تقدمها لنا النظرية الإقتصادية، يمكن صياغتها في صورة نماذج رياضية تُقدَّر من واقع البيانات الفعلية، وهذا يُمكّننا من وضع تنبؤات على الآثار الكمية على أحد المتغيرات الإقتصادية التي يمكن أن تترتب على التغير في أحد أو بعض المتغيرات الإقتصادية الأخرى.
وحيث ان أغلب المتغيرات الإقتصادية قابلة للقياس الكمي مثل السعر، الدخل... إلخ، فإنه يمكن إستخدام الأسلوب الرياضي في شرح العلاقات الإتجاهية، كما تحددها النظرية الإقتصادية، بين هذه المتغيرات.
كما أن هناك نماذج أخرى غير سببية تعتمد على القيم التاريخية للمتغير المراد التكهن بقيمته المستقبلية ولا تحتاج إلى تحديد المتغيرات التي تفسر سلوكه ويعرف هذا النوع من النماذج باسم نماذج السلاسل الزمنية التي تذبذباتها ناتجة عن الإتجاه العام الذي يعبر عن الحركة طويلة المدى والتقلبات الموسمية والدورية وكذلك التقلبات العشوائية.
