بالنسبة إلى العصر العبّاسيّ أمامنا سنّة وثلاثون بطريركاً سريانيّاً شرقيّاً لا يقابلون إلاَّ في العدد سبعة وثلاثين خليفة لأنَّ ولايات الفريقين تتراكب، وسرعان ما يتبيَّن لنا صعوبة تفضيل أحد التصنيفَيْن على الآخر: التصنيف بحسب البطاركة أو بحسب الخلفاء.
والحقّ أنّنا قد أخذنا الإثنين في نظر الإعتبار وإن كنّا أميَل إلى إيلاء أهميّة أكبر للبيئة المسلمة التي عاش النصارى في أكنافها، ولّما كنّا قد اعتمدنا الخلفاء السبعة والثلاثين رؤوساً للأقسام فقد أظهرنا، بإخراج طباعيّ مناسب، توالي البطاركة السنة والثلاثين ضمن للأقسام فقد أظهرنا، بإخراج طباعيّ مناسب، توالي البطاركة الستة والثلاثين ضمن الأقسام التي يندرجون تحتها.
لم يغب عن بالنا أن الأولويّة التي اختصصنا بها الخلفاء قد يوجد ما يسوّغها بالنسبة إلى أوائل دولة بني العبّاس، أي عندما كان الخلفاء هم الشخصيّات البارزة (وإن كان لبعض وزرائهم دور مهمّ)، وأنّه لا يوجد حتماً ما يسوِّغها في العصور المتأخِّرة من تلك الدولة كالقرن الشيعيّ في ظلّ البويهيّين أو التصلّب الدينيّ زمن السلاجقة.
إن هذه التقسيمات الكلاسيكيّة نفسها لا تنطبق على موضوعنا، إذ أنَّه من المحال أن نعمّم فنقول مثلاً إنّ "موقف" البويهيّين من النصارى كان كهذا بينما كان "موقف" السلاجقة كذاك...
إن الأمر ليكتسي صعوبة بالغة بالنسبة إلى الأواخر، لأنّ السلطة الحقيقيّة، من وجهة النظر التي تعنينا، أي من حيث العلاقة بالنصارى، كانت في أغلب الأحيان بيد العامّة الذين يحرِّكهم القصّاص أو معلِّمو المدارس (أمثال ابن فضلان) الذين كان قرارهم يغلب على قرار أولئك الذين كانوا يمسكون اسميّاً بزمام السلطة، ذلك لأنّ الحكّام لم تكن لهم أيّة رغبة في إرباك سلطتهم المتهافتة بمناصرة جماعة متناقضة الأهميّة، وإن لم يكن في وسعنا أن نحدِّد التاريخ الدقيقة الذي بدأ فيه هذا التغيّر يرتسم أو يزداد حدّة.
