في نهاية العصور الوسطى وخاصة في القرن الخامس عشر الميلادي كان الغرب الأوربي قد مل التعامل مع المماليك بسبب كثرة الضرائب وارتفاع رسوم الجمارك وقوة الاحتكارات، مما دفع الأوروبيين إلى البحث عن طريق آخر أكثر أمناً وأقل تكلفة وحققت هذا الهدف البرتغال التي اتجهت في كشوفها للوصول إلى الهند ناحية الشرق، بعكس الاسبان الذين اتجهوا في كشوفهم الجغرافية ناحية الغرب، مما كان له أكبر الأثر على مصر وعالم البحر المتوسط أثناء القرن السادس عشر، في المجالات الاقتصادية، والسياسية، والاستراتيجية، والحقيقة أن أي مشتغل بالبحوث التاريخية لا يغيب عنه معرفة جوانب كثيرة من هذا الموضوع، غير أنني أردت ببحثي هذا أن أضع هذه الجواب مجتمعة تحت غلاف واحد، وأن أقيم حجمه الحقيقي في أحداث تغير في الواقع الاقتصادي والسياسي والاستراتيجي الذي عاشته مصر وعالم البحر المتوسط، منذ وصول البرتغاليين إلى الهند عن طريق رأس الرجاء الصالح في سنة 1948 وحتى نهاية القرن السادس عشر، أو بالأحرى نهاية الفترة التي ظهرت فيها انعكاسات هذا الحدث التاريخي الهام، وردود الفعل المختلفة إزاءه، والنتائج التي ترتبت عليه، ولهذا فإنني سأعالج هذا الموضوع من الناحية المنهجية بتقسيمه إلى ثلاث فصول، أولها أتتبع فيه التجارة العالمية عبر مصر وعالم البحر المتوسط قبيل تحولها إلى طريق رأس الرجاء الصالح في نهاية القرن الخامس عشر، وثانيها أتتبع فيه دور البرتغاليين في أحداث هذا التحول في نهاية القرن المذكور، وثالثها أتتبع فيه الآثار التي أحدثها هذا التحول في مقدرات مصر وعالم البحر المتوسط أثناء القرن السادس عشر من النواحي الاقتصادية، والسياسية، والدبلوماسية، والاستراتيجية.
وقد استندت في هذه الدراسة إلى عدد من المصادر الوثائقية والمخطوطة المعاصرة، وإلى عدد آخر من البحوث والمراجع المنشورة الموثقة. وكانت الوثائق المحفوظة بأرشيف الشهر العقاري بالاسكندرية، والتي تخص محكمة الاسكندرية الشرعية، والتي ارفقت بالبحث عشرين وثيقة مختارة منها لم يسبق نشرها، من أهم المصادر الوثائقية لهذه الدراسة، فهي تعد مصدراً خصباً وثرياً للمادة العلمية، كما تعتبر من أصدق وثائق تاريخ مصر في العصر العثماني، وقد قسمتها إلى مجموعتين أولهما تتعلق بالنشاط التجاري للتجار المغاربة في الاسكندرية وعددها ثلاث عشرة وثيقة، وثانيهما تتعلق بالنشاط التجاري للجاليات الأوروبية وبعض مواطني جزر البحر المتوسط المقيمين بالاسكندرية وعددها سبع وثائق، وتعود جميعها إلى منتصف القرن العاشر الهجري والسادس عشر الميلادي.
