الرجل موضوع هذا الكتاب هو إحدى الشخصيات التي شكلت عقدي الستينات والسبعينات من هذا القرن، وهذان العقدان يمثلان في نظر الكثيرين فترة تولدت فيها تغيرات جذرية في الفكر السياسي والاجتماعي والفني، وفي الأزياء والموسيقى والأدب والفن، وبعض أهم الأشياء التي تميز تلك الفترة هي: جوقة الخنافس، اليسار الجديد، الثورة الطلابية وبروز العالم الثالث إلخ... مالكوم إكس هو أحد صناع تلك الفترة: مالكوم كان أحد أهم قادة ثورة السود الذين أفصحوا عنها وصاغوا شعاراتها وألهموا جماهيرها. وقد عاش حياة عاصفة، في مسيرة حياته تلك عاش مالكوم مكابدات وتحولات نفسية وفكرية عميقة، وبعض هذه قد تصدم المرء، وكل ما أرجوه هو ألا ينزعج القارئ من صراحة أفكار صاحب السيرة.
هذا الكتاب من الكتب المهمة جدًا في رأيي خاصة بالنسبة لنا في العالم الثالث العربي الإسلامي. وهو من الكتب المشهورة عالميًا، كذلك يدرس الكتاب في الجامعات الأمريكية كجزء من الأعمال الكلاسيكية الأمريكية فالكتاب رغم تعدد طبعاته في الغرب ما زال يقرأ باهتمام هناك. ولقد أحزنني حقًا أن الكتاب يكاد يكون مجهولًا عند قراء العربية، ولعل هذا السبب الأول الذي جعلني أندفع في ترجمته بشغف واستغراق.
