في 11 سبتمبر (أيلول) من عام 2001، صدمت طائرتان مركز التجارة العالمي في مدينة نيويورك مما أدى إلى انهيار البرجين. أما الطائرة الثالثة فضربت مبنى وزارة الدفاع الأميركية "البنتاغون" في واشنطن، والرابعة كان هدفها البيت الأبيض الأميركي، ولكنها تحطمت في حقل في بنسلفانيا. هذا الهجوم الإرهابي الذي نظمه أسامة بن لادن أدى إلى مقتل 2900 شخصاً وأحدث اضطراباً في العالم الغربي كلّه. حينها، أظهرت جميع الدول الأوروبية تماسكاً نموذجياً، ولكن مخادعاً، إذ أن ردّات فعل هذه الدول كانت دوماً باردة أمام مصائب أخرى أكثر بشاعة حدثت في مناطق أخرى من العالم؛ ذلك أن الأمة الأميركية وبتحريض من الإدارة والإعلام الأميركيين الذين قاما بتغطية هذه الأحداث، كانا يصوّرانها دائماً على أنها الضحية.
عندما ننكبُّ على قراءة التاريخ الحالي للولايات المتحدة الأميركية، ندرك تماماً بأن الأميركيين بعيدون كل البعد عن كونهم ضحايا. بل على العكس، فإن تعطشهم للانتقام مثير للسخرية. لذلك على الساعات والأيام القادمة أن تكون منطلقاً للنقد الذاتي لسياستهم وليس للتطرف والحرب.
هذا الكتاب لم يوضع ليكون صرخة حقد ضد الولايات المتحدة الأميركية، وإنما على العكس من هذا، فهو بادرة سلام. أما إذا أراد الأميركيون الانغلاق داخل منطق المذهب المانوي (صاحب عقيدة الصراع بين النور والظلام-مذهب ماني الفارسي) فسوف يسبب هذا تصعيداً للعنف، حتى ولو كانوا أكبر قوة في العالم. فهل يريدون تزايداً لأعمال العنف والإرهاب في أراضيهم؟ وهل يتطلعون للعيش في مناخ من الخوف والهلع الدائمين؟ إذا كان الجواب بالنفي، وجب عليهم الاعتدال وتهدئة روعهم.
سوف تكتشفون عند قراءتكم هذا الكتاب بأن الأميركيين هم أبعد ما يكونون مؤهلين للعب دور العذارى المهانة.
